UC Irvine Has Strong Showing in Season Opener

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -
The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team kicked off the 2022 season Saturday at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational. The one-day meet was held at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
 
Deandra Tyler led the way in the throws as she entered UCI's all-time top-10 in both the weight throw (8th) and shot put (9th) with marks of 46-11 and 39-08, respectively.
 
On the track, Reyna Johnson won her preliminary heat to automatically qualify for the 60m hurdle final where she finished eighth overall. She had the fourth-fastest prelim time at 8.82, which ranks ninth in program history. Johnson was also the Anteaters' top performer in the long jump (17-06).
 
In the sprints, Aryel Coats registered the seventh-fastest 60m (7.81) and 200m (25.33) times in indoor school history. Zani Meaders also made her way back to competition with a top-10 showing in her first 400m race since 2020. Meaders crossed the finish line in 57.61 to place sixth overall.
 
Cathy Salazar-Gasca notched a personal-record 5:09.12 in the mile to come in 13th out of 39 competitors. Her time also puts her among UC Irvine's all-time top-10. Hannah Chau added a 15th-place finish (5:15.08).
 
Morgan Jennings ran the 10th-fastest 600m in school history, clocking in at 1:41.66.
 
Emma McCarthy (2:20.06), Alexis Alexander (2:21.94) and Jennifer Daly (2:24.85) all made their indoor debuts for UCI in the 800m.
 
Kayla Rodriguez led a quartet of 'Eaters in the unseeded 200m, coming in eighth with a time of 26.96. Ashley Tabag wasn't far behind in ninth at 27.12.
