IRVINE, Calif. -Â The UC Irvine men's tennis team is ready to begin its 2022 dual match season on the road this weekend as it heads to the University of San Diego on Friday, Jan. 21, and No. 9 USC on Sunday, Jan. 23.
Â
The 'Eaters are looking to build off a strong fall campaign where they played in four tournaments. Junior
Matthew Sah finished with a team-best seven singles wins, while graduate transfers
Emmanuel Coste and
Riccardo Roberto both made an appearance at the prestigious ITA All-American Championships in October.
Â
"Our guys played a lot of matches in the fall," head coach
Mike Saunders stated. "That competitive experience will pay off this season."
Â
The Anteaters have a well-balanced squad with four returners and five newcomers. Among the newcomers are Coste and Roberto, who have Power 5 experience as they previously played at Oregon and Alabama, respectively. UCI also added true freshmen, and Southern California natives,
Rithvik Krishna,
Noah Zamora and
Lawee Sherif.
Â
Returning for UC Irvine are Sah,
Mike Mkrtchian,
Ali Amiri and
Thomas Smart. Sah earned All-Big West honorable mention recognition in doubles in 2021 after going 7-5 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Mkrtchian, meanwhile, tied for the team lead with nine dual-match singles victories last year. The Reseda, California, native closed out the regular season on a seven-match win streak and finished Big West action with a perfect 6-0 record.
Â
"We are a threat at every position and our depth will galvanize our confidence, individually and collectively," Saunders said. "The secret sauce this year will be how we compete as a team. The more inspired and courageous we are, the better we will do. You have to believe and have the guts to give everything you have to succeed in tennis. We understand that; now we have to show up and have the passion, discipline and resilience to do the work, love the battle, and find a way to get the job done."
