COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The UC Irvine men's track & field team saw both of its regional qualifiers compete on the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary Championships Wednesday at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
Jack Pickard kicked off the meet for the Anteaters in the javelin where he finished 21st, coming in 11 spots ahead of his No. 32 seeding. Pickard's best toss of the afternoon was on his first attempt where he hit 205-09.
The Concord, Calif., native wraps up a stellar two-year career at UC Irvine as he advanced to the NCAA West Prelims and earned All-Big West honors in both seasons. This year, Pickard placed among the top-two in all eight of his regular-season competitions, including a runner-up finish at the Big West Championships on May 13. He established a lifetime-best and school-record 221-00 as a junior in 2019.
Kyle Tsu, who was making his second career NCAA West Preliminary appearance, fouled on his three attempts in the shot put. Tsu entered the meet as the 34th seed with a personal-record 59-05.5, which he established in a first-place finish at the Big West Championships. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native joined Mason Miller (2015) and Mike Morales (1989, 1990) as UCI's all-time Big West men's shot put champions. Tsu placed among the top-three in each of his eight regular-season shot put competitions.
UC Irvine's season will continue in two weeks with
Josh Farmer punching his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the decathlon, June 9-10, in Eugene, Oregon. Since the combined events are not contested at the Preliminary Round sites, the
top-24 declared student-athletes are accepted directly into the national championships. Farmer is seeded 12th.
