CHANDLER, Ariz. - The UC Irvine men's golf team concluded the first two rounds of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in a tie for 14th Monday at the par-72, 7,334-yard Cattail Course at Whirlwind Golf Club.

The Anteaters were one of 11 teams to make it through 36 holes before play was suspended due to darkness. The rest of the squads will resume action tomorrow at 7 a.m., with the final round to follow immediately.

The 'Eaters carded a season-best 3-under 285 in the opening round. That put them in a tie for seventh with San Diego and No. 36 Stanford, but they ended up dropping seven spots following a second-round 298. At the time play was suspended, No. 28 San Diego State held a 14-stroke lead on the 23-team field.

Junior
Nathan Irwin was UCI's top overall performer as he tied for 30th at 1-under 143. Irwin matched his season-best with a 71 (-1) in the first round, and followed with an even-par 72 in the second. He had a team-best seven birdies on the day.

Graduate student
Jonathan Kang started the tournament with a season-best 3-under 69, firing four birdies against only one bogey. Kang was unable to keep the momentum on his side, however, as he saw a significant drop on the leaderboard by the end of the day. Kang is currently tied for 56th at 3-over 147 (69-78).

Freshman
Darien Zhao is also tied for 56th, shooting a 72 (E) and 75 (+3), while classmates
Kolbe Irei and
Henry Fitzhugh are tied for 88th (151). Irei jumped 12 spots in the standings with a season-best 1-over 73 in the second round.
