RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's track & field team started the UC Riverside/Long Beach State split meet with the distance events Thursday at the UCR Track Facility.
 
Cameron Smith had an impressive performance in his second career steeplechase, clocking a personal record and Big West qualifying time of 9:39.99. He saw a 17-second improvement from his first steeple race at the Beach Invitational on April 16.
 
Lukas Amare also notched a lifetime-best 15:17.39 for a top-10 finish in the 5000m (6th), while Jason Messner took fourth in the 800m (1:58.34).
 
The Anteaters will continue the split meet tomorrow with the sprints/hurdles crew competing in Riverside and the throws squad making their way to Long Beach.
