'Eaters Conclude First Round of Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -
The UC Irvine men's golf team is in 12th place after the first round of the 74th Western Intercollegiate Monday at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
 
The Anteaters combined for a 6-count-5 total of 371. They are one stroke behind UTEP, and four back of 23rd-ranked San Diego State. No. 43 Washington had the best team score of the day at even-par 350.
 
Graduate student Jonathan Kang was UCI's top performer in the opening round, carding a 72 (+2) to tie for 28th. Kang made the turn at even-par, but a double bogey on the 11th put him at 2-over.
 
Junior Nathan Irwin is also tied for 41st after 18 holes. Irwin had three bogeys over the first seven, but responded with back-to-back birdies to get to 1-over. He then had two more bogeys on the back nine for a first-round 73 (+3).
 
Freshmen Henry Fitzhugh and Darien Zhao both recorded a 75 to tie for 56th, while junior Matt Gunson is tied for 65th (76). Freshman Kolbe Irei rounds out the group in 89th.
 
The 'Eaters return to action tomorrow for the second round of the Western Intercollegiate with tee times starting at 9:06 a.m. GOLF Channel will be providing live coverage of the tournament from 4-7 p.m. (PDT).
