'Eaters Tie for Third at UC San Diego Invitational

CARLSBAD, Calif. -
The UC Irvine men's golf team moved up one spot in the final round of the UC San Diego Invitational, tying for third Tuesday at La Costa Champions Course.
 
The Anteaters combined for a 54-hole score of 904 (310-295-299). Utah State claimed the team title at 893, finishing four strokes ahead of Southern Utah (897).

The Aggies' Colten Cordingley and San Diego State's Liam Koeneke tied for first at 2-over 218. Koeneke won a three-hole playoff for individual medalist honors.
 
Freshman Darien Zhao (73-71-80) and junior Nathan Irwin (77-73-74) led the 'Eaters in a tie for ninth at 8-over 224. It was the first career top-10 collegiate finish for both individuals. Irwin jumped four spots on the leaderboard with a third-round 74, while Zhao struggled over the final 18 holes as he dropped from second to ninth.
 
Graduate student Jonathan Kang made the biggest leap for UC Irvine, climbing 10 spots to crack the top-20. Kang, who started the round with three consecutive birdies, tied for the fourth-best score of the day at even-par 72. He finished the tournament in a tie for 17th with a total of 228 (80-76-72).
 
Freshman Henry Fitzhugh also had his best 18-hole score of the tournament on Tuesday, coming in at 1-over 73. He tied for 27th (231).
 
Competing as an individual, freshman Kolbe Irei placed 23rd overall (229).
 
UC Irvine will return to action in a couple weeks at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz., April 5-6.
