UC Irvine Finishes Fourth in Season-Opening Tournament

The UC Irvine men's golf team finished fourth in the second annual Orange County Collegiate Classic Tuesday at Coto de Caza South Course.
 
The Anteaters, who served as co-hosts with Cal State Fullerton for their season-opening tournament, combined for a two-day, 54-hole score of 901. They were 11 strokes behind third-place Cal Poly. San Francisco took home the team title for the second year in a row with an even-par 864, while Cal State Fullerton (876) came in second.

The Dons' Alex Chin claimed medalist honors at 3-under 217 (72-71-70).
 
Before beginning the final 18 holes, most of the players made their way out to the course Tuesday morning to finish the second round after play was suspended last night due to darkness.
 
Graduate student Jonathan Kang paced UCI's 5-count-4 lineup as he tied for sixth. It was his seventh career top-10 finish. Kang was steady over the course of both days with an overall score of 1-over 217 (73-71-73). In the second round, Kang had the Anteaters' first eagle of the season on the par-5, 555-yard sixth hole.
 
Junior Matt Gunson also tied for 15th with a total of 222 (74-73-75), while freshman Darien Zhao (74-88-71) and junior Nathan Irwin (76-80-77) both carded a 233 to tie for 32nd. Zhao, who was making his collegiate debut this week, had his best score in the final round where he had three birdies and two bogeys for a 1-under 71. Freshman Kolbe Irei rounded out the lineup in 42nd (244).
 
Competing as an individual, junior Ethan Han was UC Irvine's top finisher as he tied for fourth. It was his first career top-10 finish. After posting back-to-back personal collegiate-best rounds of 71 (-1), Han closed out the tournament with an even-par 216 (71-71-74). Han had a team-leading 13 birdies.
 
Freshman Henry Fitzhugh, also participating as an individual, posted a top-20 showing in his first collegiate tournament. Fitzhugh recorded a score of 225 (72-73-80) to tie for 19th.
