IRVINE, Calif. - Bjorn Hoffmann (Newport Beach, Calif.) earned his second-straight Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week award the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon.

Hoffmann is the first Anteater to win back-to-back weekly awards since Victor Lamm in 2008.

Hoffmann was recognized for his performance in a road battle at San Diego on Sunday, Feb. 14. The 6-foot-2 graduate transfer from Cal, earned a statement singles win, defeating the Toreros' nationally-ranked August Holmgren at the top of the lineup.

Hoffmann cruised to a 6-3 victory over No. 60 Holmgren in the first frame. The two then went back-and-forth in the second set with Hoffmann trailing, 5-4, before taking the next three games for the 6-3, 7-5 triumph. The win kept the 'Eaters alive, bringing the team score to 3-2. USD eventually clinched the match and came away with the 5-2 victory.

Hoffmann continued an impressive start to his UCI career as he is now 2-1 in singles, while playing all three matches at No. 1. His only loss came at top-ranked USC.

UC Irvine will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 21, when it welcomes Fresno State to Anteater Tennis Stadium for an 11 a.m. dual match.
