RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Junior
Hannah Chau and freshman
Anna Vogtmann both had a top-10 individual performance to lead the UC Irvine women's cross country team to a runner-up showing Saturday at the Highlander Invitational.
The Anteaters, who came in behind Cal State Fullerton, were second out of 25 teams with 88 points.
In a field of 262 athletes, Chau secured her third-straight top-three individual finish. She completed the 6,000-meter race at the UCR Ag/Ops Course in a personal-record 20:16.9 (3rd), improving her No. 2 time in program history by nearly five seconds.
Vogtmann clocked in with a lifetime-best 20:52.0 to place seventh overall and move up to No. 6 on UCI's all-time charts. In her second career 6K, Vogtmann shaved nine seconds off her previous best.
Freshman
Amber Rios added a season-best 21:38.8 to come in 27th, while classmate
Sameen Andar was 33rd at 21:42.8. Sophomore
McKenna Paulson was 34th with a personal-best 21:43.7.
Rounding out the Anteaters' top-seven were sophomore
Cathy Salazar-Gasca (22:00.1) and freshman
Makena Castillo (22:03.2).
Graduate transfer
Evelin Meza also made her Anteater debut, while sophomores
Claire Livengood and
Nikki Fulcomer made their season debuts.
UC Irvine is back in action next week, making the short trip to Cal State Fullerton for the Titan Invite on Friday, Oct. 22.
