'Eaters Take Down League-Leading UC Davis
Women's Basketball
February 8, 2020

The UC Irvine women's basketball team upended league-leading UC Davis in a 73-68 thriller at the Bren Events Center back in February.

The Anteaters snapped UCD's seven-game win streak, and were the first team to score more than 70 points against the Aggies since their last loss on Jan. 9. They had entered the game allowing 53.0 ppg against conference opponents. It was also UCI's first win over UC Davis in fourth-year head coach Tamara Inoue's tenure.

The 'Eaters went up by as many as 10 in the third quarter, but the visitors mounted a comeback early in the fourth with a 10-4 run tying it up at 59-all with 6:38 to go. Dani Guglielmo responded with a triple and UCI stayed out front until back-to-back buckets by the Aggies gave them their first lead since the second frame. That lead would change hands two more times before another clutch three from Guglielmo put UC Irvine on top for good (69-68) with 43.2 seconds on the clock. Guglielmo and Lauren Saiki both converted their free throws down the stretch to secure the 73-68 win.

"We battled for 40 minutes," said Inoue. "I'm really proud of this team for the way they finished the game. We had opportunities where we could have crumbled, but we didn't. Our players fought right back and everyone contributed in a big way."

The Anteaters shot 44% overall, and a then season-best 45% (9-20) from downtown. Saiki was 7-of-14 from the field for a team-best 17 points. She also dished out a game-high seven assists. Guglielmo added 16 points with four triples, while Sophia Locandro notched her third-straight double-figure scoring game (10 points), to go along with six rebounds and two blocks.

Haleigh Talbert chipped in nine points and a career-best nine boards. Jayde Cadee also finished with nine points, hitting some timely shots from behind the arc where she was 3-for-4.
