UCI Begins Weekend Road Trip with 5-2 Win over Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's tennis team earned its second-straight road win as it topped Sonoma State, 5-2, Saturday at the SSU Tennis Courts.

The Anteaters (2-2) clinched the match before the Seawolves (3-1) got on the board.

In doubles, junior Jeremy Merville and freshman Matthew Sah set the tone with a 6-1 victory over Harry Cohen/Santiago Saurdiansky on court two. UCI's No. 1 pairing of sophomore Mark Peneff and junior Mateusz Smolicki quickly followed suit, defeating Max Nudell/Lovedeep Singh, 6-3, to secure the early lead.

The 'Eaters made some last minute lineup changes in singles, but it didn't faze them as they won the first three decisions to seal the team win. Merville dispatched Cohen, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3, before freshman Ali Amiri recorded his first collegiate dual-match victory, 6-1, 6-1, over Paul Trabitzsch at No. 5.

Sophomore Mike Mkrtchian then delivered the final blow with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Alec Wong on court six.

Senior Daniel Gealer also outlasted Nudell, 3-6, 6-1, 10-7, to improve to 3-1 in dual-match play.

UC Irvine will be back in action tomorrow when it makes its way to Stockton for a 10 a.m. tilt at Pacific.
