UC Irvine Downed By Pepperdine, 3-0

MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine used tough serving to win a critical second set and went on to beat UC Irvine, 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-17) at Firestone Fieldhouse.

The Waves had 10 aces for the match, including five in the second set.

Pepperdine out-hit UCI .261 to .160. The Anteaters hit .317 in the first frame, then hit .075 and .079 in the next two.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Junior Loryn Carter led UCI with nine kills, putting away seven in the first set
>Middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu had eight kills, hitting .533 (8-0-15) with one block assist
>Junior Cassie Stewart added seven kills
>Pepperdine was led by Shannon Scully with 14 kills and two aces. Rachel Ahrens had a team-high four aces for the Waves

TURNING POINTS
SET ONE

>Kills by Loryn Carter and Cassie Stewart gave UCI an early 3-1 lead, but the Waves would score the next five to sprint ahead 6-3
>UCI would stay close and then use a Wave service and attack error followed by a block by Makayla Wolfe and Carter to knot the score at 18-18
>Pepperdine would score the next three to regain the lead, but UCI wouldn't go away using three kills by Carter to tie the set at 21-21
>The Waves would finish out the set, out-scoring UCI, 4-2 to win 25-23

SET TWO
>With the score tied at 5-5, a kill and block assist by Onye Ofoegbu helped UCI to an 9-5 lead
> The Waves would chip away and tie the score at 9 all
>Abby Marjama would have back-to-back aces in a 7-1 Anteater run to force a Wave timeout, 16-10
>A kill and ace by Wolfe plus a Marjama kill put the Anteaters up 20-14
>Pepperdine would score four unanswered to creep to 22-19 
>The Anteater passing would struggle and the Waves would tie the set at 23-23
>At 24-24, two UCI attack errors would complete Pepperdine's comeback, 26-24

SET THREE
>Pepperdine would score the first three points before UCI would catch up 3-3
>The Waves would peel off seven straight to take a 10-3 advantage
>Four in a row by Pepperdine increased the lead to 17-5
>Kiani Stanton would infused some energy with three blocks and a kill to help UCI to 24-17, but an Anteater service error would end the set 25-17 and the match 3-0

NOTES
>Libero Chloe Owens led the team in digs with 11
>It is the sixth time this season, UCI has been swept
