SACRAMENTO - Sophomore
Seth Enochs kicked off the NCAA West Preliminaries for the UC Irvine men's track & field team with a 15th-place finish in the long jump Thursday at Hornet Stadium.
Â
Enochs was just over two inches short of advancing to nationals as the top-12 punched their ticket to Austin, Texas, for the NCAA Championships, June 5-8.
Â
Enochs, who entered his first career regional meet as the No. 15 seed, opened with a solid mark of 24-05.5. That stood as his best jump of the afternoon with his next two attempts measuring 24-02.25 and 23-11.75. He was 15th out of 48 competitors.
Â
Enochs was UCI's first regional qualifier in the men's long jump since the inception of the meet in 2003. He also earned all-conference honors with a runner-up showing at the Big West Championships (May 10) where he notched a wind-aided personal-record 25-04. Two weeks prior, the Yucca Valley, Calif., native registered a wind-legal PR of 25-00.75 at the Steve Scott Invitational. That was the best jump by an Anteater since 1984 and ranks fourth in school history.
