LIHUE, Hawaii - The UC Irvine men's golf team took an early lead and stayed out front through 36 holes of the Big West Championships Monday at Wailua Golf Course.
The Anteaters battled through some tough weather conditions, including intermittent showers, to record a 586 (288-298). Their first-round 288 was the low score of the day.
The 'Eaters will enter tomorrow's final round with a three-stroke lead over Long Beach State (589), while UC Davis (591), Cal State Fullerton (592) and UC Santa Barbara (597) round out the top-five.
Freshman
Matt Gunson is tied for second with a 36-hole score of 143. He held steady at 74 (+2) through the first 18 before climbing 11 spots on the leaderboard with a 3-under 69. In the second round, Gunson had four birdies and only one bogey, which didn't come until the 16th hole.
Gunson is tied with Cal State Fullerton's Matt Wilson, and is just one stroke behind individual leader Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara (142).
Junior
Jonathan Kang opened with the best round of his collegiate career, firing off seven birdies to card a 4-under 68. He was unable to maintain that pace through the second round, but remained in the top-10 with a 145 (68-77).
Junior
Anthony Truong also got out to a strong start, quickly getting to 3-under with an eagle and birdie. He went on to finish the first round with a 71 before shooting a 76 to tie for 11th (147).

Chris Casey is 24th at 151 (75-76), while classmate
Ramiz Jamal is tied for 26th at 153 (76-77).
UC Irvine returns to Wailua Golf Course for the final round of the Big West Championships on Tuesday. The Anteaters will tee off with Long Beach State and UC Davis at 8:20 a.m. (HT) / 11:20 a.m. (PT).
