Jamal, Truong Lead UCI on First Day of Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -
The UC Irvine men's golf team is in 11th place after Monday's opening round of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
 
The Anteaters recorded a 6-count-5 total of 372. They are two strokes behind Washington and three back of San Diego State.
 
Host San Jose State took an early two-stroke lead at 4-under 346. No. 6 USC and No. 39 Oregon had identical rounds of 348 to sit in second.
 
Juniors Anthony Truong and Ramiz Jamal are tied for 31st following a first-round 2-over 72. After starting with a par and birdie, Truong had a tough stretch where he bogeyed six of the next nine holes, but he bounced back to finish with four-straight birdies. His six total birdies were tops on the team and tied for third in the tournament.
 
Jamal had a three-bogey afternoon while his lone birdie came on the par-4 fourth.
 
Freshman Matt Gunson shot a 74 to tie for 49th. Gunson held steady at 2-over par for most of the second nine before a double bogey on the 18th.  
 
Junior Jonathan Kang, who is competing in his first tournament since the Sacramento State Invitational (March 4-5), notched a 6-over 76 to tie for 63rd.
 
Freshman Nathan Irwin is also 74th (78) and junior Chris Casey is 79th (79).
 
Justin Suh (USC), Isaiah Salinda (Stanford) and Sean Yu (SJSU) are in a three-way tie for first at 6-under 64.
 
UC Irvine resumes play at the Western Intercollegiate tomorrow with the second round starting at 9:30 a.m. Golf Channel will be airing live coverage of the tournament starting at 4 p.m. (PDT).
