Anteaters Claim Cal Poly Match Play Tournament Title

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. -
The UC Irvine men's golf team defeated fellow Big West member UC Santa Barbara to claim the Cal Poly Match Play Tournament tile Tuesday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.
 
The 'Eaters earned a 3.5-1.5 victory over the Gauchos in the championship match.
 
Junior Ramiz Jamal fell behind by three early but rebounded to win four holes on the back nine for a 2&1 triumph over Zach Smith at the top of the lineup.
 
Junior Anthony Truong was out front for most of his match against Brett Bennett, and his win on the 17th hole sealed the 2&1 victory.
 
Freshman Matt Gunson led wire-to-wire in a 4&2 win over Justin Sheparovich.
 
Junior Chris Casey halved his match against Brandon Jacobs. The two were even until Casey took the advantage, winning the 11th and 12th holes. Jacobs was able to pull one back on the 16th before tying it up on the 18th.

Truong and Gunson both went 3-0 over the course of the tournament.
 
This was the Anteaters' second team win at the Cal Poly Match Play Tournament as they also took first in 2015.
 
UC Irvine is back in action next week, traveling to University Place, Wash., for the Redhawk Invitational (April 1-2).
