UCI Concludes Competition at Don Kirby Invitational

The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team concluded action at the two-day Don Kirby Invitational Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
 
"I think our team experienced some great competition this weekend," head coach Jeff Perkins said. "We were definitely humbled in some ways, but we also had some moments where we see the future to be very bright for our team in the coming months."
 
Junior Tatyana Hamlett registered a lifetime-best 38-02.75 to finish 15th in the triple jump. Her mark moves her up five spots to No. 3 in program history.
 
Senior Elizabeth Akindele notched a season-best 44-01.25 for a top-20 showing in the shot put.
 
Freshman Zani Meaders had another strong outing in the 400m, placing 14th overall (56.54). Two weekends ago, Meaders ran the second-fastest indoor 400m in school history with a personal-best 56.53.
 
Senior Mychal Robinson came in 12th out of 46 in the 60m hurdle qualifying round with a time of 8.92 seconds. She missed the cut for the semifinals by 0.1 seconds as only the top-eight advanced.
 
Senior Hope Bushnell placed 23rd in the 60m dash prelims with a time of 7.78 seconds. Sophomore Natalie Koppel was the Anteaters' top finisher in the qualifying round, matching her season best at 8.05 (44th). Robinson also clocked in at 8.11 seconds.
 
In the mile, junior Brenda Dorantes ran an altitude-adjusted personal-record 5:28.57. Junior Keely Boyd added a season-best 5:31.42, while senior Megan Mirkhanian wasn't far behind at 5:31.73.
 
UC Irvine will now have two weeks to prepare for the MPSF Championships in Seattle, Feb. 22-23.
