SEATTLE -
Freshman Zani Meaders made an impressive MPSF debut, establishing a school record and placing among the top-10 in the 400m at the conference meet Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.

Meaders was 10th among some of the nation's best, including athletes from No. 2 USC, No. 3 Oregon and No. 9 Stanford. She put up the second-best time by a freshman in the race. The rookie clocked in at 55.78, beating a three-year old school record by .74 seconds. Meaders came into the meet with UCI's second-fastest time (56.53), which she also ran on the Dempsey Indoor track at the UW Invitational on Jan. 26.

This was the Anteaters' second school record of the weekend as senior Barbara Coward bettered her own standard in the weight throw on Friday.

"We are elated for the success that both Barbara and Zani have had indoors," head coach Jeff Perkins said. "Both are in great form and have shown confidence which should lead to more success in the outdoor season."

Sophomore Mikayla Scott added a 26th-place showing in the 400m with a season-best 57.78. Freshman Briana Johnson (60.59) and junior Cecily Montanez (60.81) were 39th and 40th, respectively.

Johnson, Meaders, freshman Destiny Whitaker and Scott also teamed up to take 16th in the 4x400 relay (3:54.05).

In her first individual event of the season, freshman Hannah Chau came in 39th in the mile (5:22.43).

Senior Elizabeth Akindele recorded a season-best 45-01 in the shot put, which was good for 15th overall. Junior Taytana Hamlett was also UC Irvine's top finisher in the triple jump at 36-05.5 (14th).

The 'Eaters kick off the outdoor season next week, making the short trip to Long Beach for the Beach Opener, March 1-2.
