Jamal Leads UCI in Opening Round at Wailua Golf Course

Round 1 Results

LIHUE, Hawaii -
The UC Irvine men's golf team sits in 19th place after the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Thursday at Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Kauai.
 
The Anteaters shot a 303 through the first 18 holes. No. 23 BYU leads the loaded field at 280. The Cougars are one stroke ahead of No. 20 Texas A&M, and two in front of No. 14 Arizona State.
 
Junior Ramiz Jamal leads the 'Eaters as he carded a 71 (-1) to sit in a tie for 22nd. He recorded an eagle on the par-5, 520-yard first hole which brought him to 3-under. Jamal, who started on the 13th, then had two bogeys and one double bogey before finishing strong with two of his team-best four birdies on the last three holes.
 
Juniors Anthony Truong and Chris Casey both shot a first-round 4-over 76 to tie for 76th. Truong picked up momentum on his final nine where he was 1-under par.  
 
Freshman Nathan Irwin (80) and junior Jonathan Kang (81) rounded out UCI's lineup.
 
Daniel Kolar (Washington State) and Peter Kuest (BYU) both carded a 66 to sit atop the individual leaderboard.
 
UC Irvine returns to Wailua Golf Course Friday for the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate. Play will begin at 10 a.m. (PT) with a shotgun start.
