Final Results

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -
Junior Jonathan Kang claimed individual runner-up honors to lead the UC Irvine men's golf team at its own Anteater Invitational Tuesday at Big Canyon Country Club.

The 'Eaters were eighth in the team standings at 905 (304-300-301). Cal State Fullerton ran away with the team title (863), finishing 11 strokes ahead of Grand Canyon.

"We are extremely grateful to Big Canyon for all they did to make this tournament happen," UCI head coach Paul Smolinski said. "I am thrilled Jonathan led our team with one of his better collegiate tournaments. Now that we have our first spring tournament under our belt, we hope to improve as we move forward and try to get ready for the Big West Championships."

Kang entered Tuesday's third round in a tie for third, but took over sole possession of second after firing a 69 (-3). It was his best 18-hole score of the tournament and matched his career low. He finished with a total of 4-under 212 (70-73-69). Kang was one of four individuals to shoot under par, and was four strokes behind medalist Filip Lundell of Grand Canyon. Kang now has two career top-five showings, previously placing fifth at the 2018 Big West Championships.

Freshman Nathan Irwin (79-78-75) and junior Ramiz Jamal (79-72-81) tied for 39th with a three-round total of 232. Irwin moved up six spots in the standings with a 75 in the final round. Jamal's best performance came in Monday's second round where he had a hole-in-one on the 12th.

Junior Anthony Truong tied for 47th with a 54-hole score of 234 (81-77-76), while freshman Parker Lestz, who was making his collegiate debut, tied for 50th at 235 (76-78-81).

Competing as an individual, junior Chris Casey tied for 29th at 229 (76-73-80). Freshmen Matt Gunson (76-76-80) and Ethan Han (80-83-74) were also 39th and 55th, respectively.

UC Irvine will be back in action next week when it heads to Lihu'e, Kaua'i, for the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Feb. 21-23. The tournament will take place at Wailua Golf Course, the site of the 2019 Big West Championships.
