Hannah Chau Finishes Fifth at Big West Championships

Results

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -
Sophomore Hannah Chau led the UC Irvine women's cross country team at the Big West Championships, earning all-conference honors with a fifth-place individual finish Saturday at UCR Ag/Ops Course.

Chau is the Anteaters' first All-Big West performer on the women's side in 11 years.

"Our goal for Hannah was to be top-five and give herself a chance to be in contention for the championship, and she did that perfectly today," UCI distance coach Casey Kear said. "She ran smart, got out under control and built her way up every mile to get in that top-five. She really set the tone for our team as she has done all year."

Chau covered the 6000-meter championship course in 20:51.9. It was her second-best 6K time as she ran a personal-record 20:44.5 on the same course at the UCR Invitational back in September. This was her fourth top-10 showing in five races this season, and her third consecutive top-five finish.

As a team, the 'Eaters matched their Big West finish from a year ago, coming in fifth overall, which is their highest placing since 2008. They were only 29 points behind UC Santa Barbara.

"We finished a little closer to UC Santa Barbara than in years past so that's a big step in the right direction," Kear added. "We had a lot of our younger individuals contribute so we're excited about the future for this group moving forward."

Sophomore Patricia Sanchez was UC Irvine's No. 2 runner, notching a personal-record 21:52.9 (28th). Senior Mariah Theologidy also established a lifetime-best 21:58.3 to come in 30th.

In her Big West debut, freshman Claire Livengood took 42nd with a personal-best 22:18.4.

Senior Brenda Dorantes added a season-best 22:23.7 (45th), while classmate Anastasia Karnaze was right on her heels in 46th (22:32.3).

Freshman Elizabeth Celada Padilla (22:46.9), freshman McKenna Paulson (23:03.3) and sophomore Daisy Garcia (23:40.8) rounded out UCI's lineup.

The Anteaters will be back in action at the NCAA West Regional in Colfax, Washington, on Friday, Nov. 15.
