UC Irvine Stays Hot on Final Day of LMU Invitational

LOS ANGELES - The UC Irvine men's tennis team stayed hot on the final day of the LMU Invitational, winning seven more matches Sunday at the LMU Tennis Courts.

The four-team tournament had each school square off in both doubles and singles over the course of three days. Although the team results do not count toward the Anteaters' record, they went 3-0, defeating Utah (5-2), Utah State (5-2) and host Loyola Marymount (4-3).

On Sunday, the 'Eaters took four of six singles matches against LMU. After a slow start, junior Jeremy Merville settled down and raised his level of play to remain undefeated on the weekend. At the No. 3 spot, Merville came from behind to upend Max Kaiser, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6.

On court four, senior Daniel Gealer competed well, defeating Austin DiGiulio in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Gealer also won all three of his singles matches at the tournament.

Sophomore Aaron Bailey cruised to a 6-1 victory in the first set before dropping a 6-4 decision to Ethan Prost at the No. 5 spot. Bailey stayed disciplined, however, and rallied for a 10-7 triumph in the decisive third set.

Freshman Matthew Sah also showed his resiliency with a 6-1, 0-6, 10-8 win over Alvaro Gonzalez at No. 6. Sah was down in the third frame 8-3, but dug deep and scored the final seven points.

In doubles, UCI won all three matches against Pac-12 member Utah. Senior Bruce Man-Son-Hing and sophomore Mark Peneff beat Azat Hankuliyev/Slava Shainyan, 8-5, at the top of the lineup.

Junior Antoine Barthe also teamed up with Gealer to dispatch Randy Cory/Rafael Grovas, 8-4, at the third position.

Merville and Sah completed the sweep, and a perfect weekend together at the No. 2 spot, as they topped Mathias Gavelin/Paul McCallie, 8-6.

This was UC Irvine's final fall tournament. The Anteaters will start their dual match season at San Francisco on Feb. 7, 2020.
