Mateusz Smolicki and sophomore
Mike Mkrtchian won the consolation final in their respective singles flights to highlight Sunday's action for the UC Irvine men's tennis team at the Aztec Fall Invitational hosted by San Diego State.
Smolicki finished the three-day tournament with a 3-1 record in the Aztec Flight. At the end of a long weekend, Smolicki dug deep to claim the consolation title as he came from behind to defeat Grand Canyon's Valentin Lang, 1-6, 6-3, 11-9.
In the consolation final of the State Flight, Mkrtchian cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Fraser Leslie of UC San Diego. Freshman
Matthew Sah also put up a fight in the third-place match, but ended up falling to SDSU's Alex Scemanenco, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. Sah finished fourth in a field of 16 competitors.
In doubles action, both Anteater duos in Flight A came up just short in a tiebreaker. Senior
Daniel Gealer and junior
Jeremy Merville dropped a 7-6 (9) decision to Lang/Jakub Novak of GCU in the third-place match. Sophomore
Mark Peneff and Sah were the consolation runners-up after a 7-6 (5) defeat to LMU's Austin Di Giulio/Ethan Prost.
The 'Eaters will resume their fall tournament season at the ITA Southwest Regional in Malibu, Calif., Oct. 17-20.
