MALIBU, Calif. -
Junior Mateusz Smolicki won the ITA Southwest Regional singles consolation championship Sunday at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

After falling in the first round of the main draw on Thursday, Smolicki proceeded to win five consecutive matches to claim the back draw title.

"I couldn't be more proud of Mateusz," UCI head coach Mike Saunders said. "He has improved so much since last fall, both as a player and as a competitor. It's rewarding to see him embrace and overcome the adversity that stood in his way this tournament, and I'm thrilled to see him compete with such resiliency and passion."

On Sunday, Smolicki came out strong, taking the first set against Ethan Prost of Loyola Marymount, 7-6 (2). He then dropped the second set before storming back for the 7-6, 4-6, 10-7 victory.

This was Smolicki's second-straight consolation singles title as he also won his flight's back draw at the Aztec Fall Invitational (Oct. 4-6). Smolicki now owns a team-best 8-2 record.

"He has a lot to be proud of and I'm sure these two consolation wins, two weeks ago in San Diego and here at the regional against the best in the Southwest, will inspire him to dig even deeper," Saunders added. "I also want to thank our volunteer coach, Bruce Man Son Hing, who coached Mateusz coutside today. There is no better tactical coach in college tennis. Our team is so fortunate to have his wisdom, commitment and sacrifice. He is a true example of 'Once an 'Eater, always an 'Eater.'"

The Anteaters will wrap up their fall season at the LMU Invitational and So Cal Intercollegiate Championship, Nov. 7-10. Both tournaments will be held in Los Angeles.
