MALIBU, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's tennis team continued ITA Southwest Regional action with five consolation singles matches Friday at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
 
Junior Mateusz Smolicki advanced to tomorrow's back draw quarterfinals with a pair of straight-set wins. Smolicki began the day with a convincing 6-4, 6-3 victory over Grand Canyon's David Weber. He then took down Joshua Williams of UC Santa Barbara, 6-4, 6-4, in the Round of 16.
 
Sophomore Mark Peneff also looked dominant in a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Ryan Brown of Loyola Marymount, but had to retire in the next round, dropping a 3-6, 6-5, ret., decision to Pepperdine's Evan Shamlian.
 
Sophomore Antoine Barthe came up short in the consolation Round of 32, falling to Axel Labrunie (Hawai'i), 6-2, 6-1.
 
The ITA Southwest Regional Championships continue Saturday at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
