IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's tennis team pulled out tough 4-1 victory over BYU Friday morning at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
It was UCI's second-straight win and gives the 'Eaters an overall record of 12-8. BYU falls to 14-4 on the season.
UCI clinched the doubles point and held of the Cougars in singles to grab the win.
"I'm incredibly proud of how we competed today," said head coach
Mike Saunders. "We fought hard for every single point no matter the score. It was a united, team win."
The duo of
Bruce Man-Son-Hing and
Vatsal Bajpai paired up at No. 2 and did not drop a point against Ben Gajardo and John Pearce, winning, 6-0.
Mason Hansen and
Luca Marquard clinched the point with a 6-4 win at the top spot.
Bajpai continued his stellar day, earning a quick, 6-1, 6-2, victory on court six to give UCI a 2-0 lead. BYU's Jeffrey Hsu answered after defeating
Sasha Krasnov, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 to make it a 2-1 match.
Luis Lopez battled at the top spot, coming out victorious with a three-set, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, triumph over the Cougars' Sean Hill. Hansen clinched the match for the 'Eaters after defeating BYU's Gajardo on court five, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-0).
Marquard was ahead, 6-2, 4-6, 5-3, before his match was abandoned at No. 3.
UC Irvine opens its Big West season tomorrow with a match againt Cal Poly at Anteater Tennis Stadium. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
