'Eaters Finish Second at UCR Spring Track Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -
 The UC Irvine women's track & field team had one of its best all-around performances of the young season as it finished second in the standings with 87.5 points Saturday at the UCR Spring Track Classic in Riverside.
 
For the second week in a row, senior Persis William-Mensah set a school record in the 200m. After becoming the first Anteater to run a sub-24 race at the UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic last Saturday (23.90), William-Mensah improved her lifetime best by .02 seconds, clocking in at 23.88 to come in behind only UNLV's Kaysha Love (23.83). Both William-Mensah and Love beat a two-year old meet record. 
 
Junior Hope Bushnell was close to cracking the 24-second mark as well, placing third overall with an all-conditions personal-best 24.06. Bushnell jumped five spots to No. 2 in the school record book. Freshman Mikayla Scott added a season-best 24.59 for a sixth-place showing, while junior Brandy Coward was ninth (25.38). Senior Sophia Zhou notched a career-best 26.68.
 
Bushnell, William-Mensah, junior Julia Sambvani and Scott picked up UCI's first event win of the day by taking top honors in the 4x100 relay with a season-best 45.16.
 
Bushnell was a double champion for the second consecutive meet as she snagged the 100m title in a wind-legal personal-record 11.77. That mark ranks fourth in program history. Scott was also third in her 100m season debut, coming in at 12 seconds flat.
 
Senior Tyra Jones earned her first individual victory of the year, finishing ahead of the pack in the 100m hurdles (14.09). Junior Mychal Robinson was third (14.34), and sophomore Iyana Cooksey contributed a top-10 showing with a season-best 14.79.
 
Sambvani led the 'Eaters in the 400m hurdles, placing fourth with a time of 63.48. Senior Simone Buchanan was also fourth in the 400m, crossing the finish line in 56.65 seconds, and Zhou added a season-best 60.35 (15th).
 
Junior Hallie Pullum put a point on the board with an eighth-place performance in the 800m (2:18.33), while sophomore Anastasia Karnaze established a personal-record 4:52.34 in the 1500m.
 
In the field events, junior Barbara Coward won the discus by over nine feet. She launched a season-best 164-06 on her first attempt and that stood as the winning mark.
 
Junior Adrienne Lee cleared a career-best 11-06.25 to tie for sixth in the pole vault. She now ranks sixth in school history.
 
Sophomore Elizabeth Akindele took fourth in the shot put with a season-best 45-11.25, while freshman Natalie Koppel (10th) and sophomore Tatyana Hamlett (20th) set season-bests of 17-11.75 and 16-03.25, respectively, in the long jump. In addition, freshman Kelly Chow had a leap of 33-01, which was just three-quarters of an inch short of her PR, in her first collegiate triple jump competition.
 
On Friday, sophomore Brianna Villanueva came in 14th in the hammer throw (143-07).

Sacramento State won the team title with 156 points.
 
UC Irvine returns to action next week at the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival in Los Angeles (March 30) and the Mondo Team Challenge in Sacramento (March 31).
