Women's Tennis Earns Wins Against Wagner, Monmouth and Drew

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y., WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J., MADISON, N.J. - The UC Irvine women's tennis team got off to a hot start to begin its 2018-19 season after collecting wins against Wagner, Monmouth and Drew Friday morning.

With the wins, UCI improves to 3-0 on the season. 

"I was pleasantly surprised with how poised the entire team was considering it was our first dual-matches and so early in the season," said head coach Elizabeth Ferris. "We have had very few practices but what we have worked on showed today. We played quite a bit today but these matches will help sharpen our games, give us some confidence, and give us a lot of looks for doubles pairings. This was a fantastic day and it feels great to start 3-0! We look forward to more competitive matches this weekend."

UC Irvine 5, Wagner 1
 The tandem of Arianna Tilbury and Flora Amiri set the tone winning at No. 2 doubles, 6-0. Freshmen Alyssia Fossorier and Dana Mackensen followed suit with a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot to take the doubles point.  Stephanie Nguyen and Jessica Tsukiji also won at the No. 1 spot, 7-5.
 
The 'Eaters won at Nos. 2-5 singles to clinch the match, with multiple freshmen winning their first career singles matches.  Freshman Jessica Tsukiji kicked things off with a 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 2 spot against Vedika Anand.  Alyssia Fossorier followed, winning 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. 
 
Stephanie Nguyen dropped a tough one at the No. 1 spot after winning the first set 7-5, losing the next two sets 6-3, 6-2.  However, Arianna Tilbury clinched the match at the No. 5 spot with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.  Flora Amiri defeated Wagner's Jasmine Hyacinth 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4.
 
Dana Mackensen was winning 4-1 in her first set in the No. 3 spot when the match was called.

UCI jumped off to a quick start against Monmouth, sweeping the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. 
 
The senior duo of Stephanie Hazell and Danielle Garrido kicked things off winning 6-3 at the No. 1 doubles spot.  At the No. 2 spot, Yulin Chen and Jacqueline Tsodikova defeated Alexandra Graff/Caroline Mattise, 7-5.  Gillian Parker and Dasee Carter won in the No. 3 spot, 6-2. 
 
In singles, Hazell earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Graff at the top spot before Monmouth's Nicole Gasser defeated Yulin Chen 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot.  UCI responded with wins at Nos. 3-6.

"I was excited for our first match today and was very happy with the results of the team," said Hazell. "I'm looking forward to the rest of the weekend and my senior year with my team. Let go 'Eaters!"

Tsodikova earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 followed by Garrido's 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 4 spot. Gillian Parker dominated in the No. 5 spot, winning the match 6-1, 6-2. 

Freshman Shreya Pavani won her first collegiate singles match in the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-3.

The Anteaters ended the day with a sweep against Drew, not dropping a point in singles or doubles to the Rangers.

Freshmen Megan Mansonhing and Dasee Carter started off with a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles before Dana Mackensen and Alyssia Fossoier clinched the point winning, 6-0 at No. 1. Arianna Tilbury and Shreya Pavani also grabbed a 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot.

In singles, Yulin Chen, Danielle Garrido, Gillian Parker, Mackensen, Pavani and Mansonhing won on courts one, two, three, four, five and six, respectively without dropping a single point to their opponents. Parker would clinch the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3.

"I was really happy with my results today!" said Parker. "I had the opportunity to work on coming to the net, which is something I've really been trying to incorporate in my matches. I'm really glad Drew was generous enough to host us this weekend, and I am looking forward to seeing some more of the east coast!"
