Kang Leads UCI on First Day of Visit Stockton Pacific Invite

STOCKTON, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team carded a 286 in the opening round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational Thursday at the par-71 Stockton Country Club.
 
The Anteaters concluded the first of the three-day tournament in a tie for 11th with Grand Canyon. San Jose State (271) sits at the top of the leaderboard with a four-stroke lead over 16th-ranked BYU. The Spartans' Kevin Velo is also first in the individual standings with a 7-under 64.
 
Junior Jonathan Kang recorded his best round of the young season as he fired a 69 (-2) to tie for 15th. Kang finished the afternoon strong with three of his team-high five birdies coming on the back nine, where he was 3-under.
 
Freshman Matt Gunson is also tied for 26th at 1-under 70. It was his second-straight round below par as he closed out last week's Bill Cullum Invitational with a 71 (-1) over the final 18 holes.

Junior Chris Casey shot a 73 (+2) to tie for 49th, while classmate Anthony Truong is one stroke back and tied for 59th. Junior Ramiz Jamal will be looking to rebound from a tough first round where he registered a 77 (+6).
 
UC Irvine continues action at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Friday with tee times set to start at 8 a.m.
