UCI Beats Lafayette in Only Match of the Day

Box Score EASTON, Penn. – This morning's match at Rider was cancelled due to excessive rain on the courts.  The Anteaters did play against Lafayette, .

"This was a solid team effort.  Lafayette pushed us in many ways," coach Elizabeth Ferris said.  "No. 2 doubles started with a game plan and were relentless in their execution.  No. 1 doubles got in a hole and almost dug themselves out of it.  No. 3 doubles was locked in a battle and had to come up with shots that I haven't seen before in order to win.  They played high level tennis to get us the doubles point.  Jackie and Gillian never let up and Jessica, Alyssia and Flora found nice rhythms to close out their matches.  Arianna's opponent gave us a tough match last year as well; she's aggressive and confident.  It was a great challenge for her and I think Arianna will learn a lot from this match."

In doubles, UCI won two of three matches beginning with Amiri/Tilbury, who won 6-2 over Lafayette's McCormick/Cooke.  Lafayette would win the next doubles match in the No. 1 spot, where Lesnick/Snyder defeat Nguyen/Tsukiji, 6-4.  UCI took the final doubles match and the doubles point as Garrido/Parker won 6-4.

"Gillian and I played a really aggressive tandem that played like they had nothing to lose," said Danielle Garrido.  "Gillian and I did a great job at staying tough and making smart shots.  I liked our teamwork and I'm glad we could clinch the doubles point for the team."

In singles, Gillian Parker finished first, winning in two sets in the No. 6 spot.  Jacqueline Tsodikova followed suit, winning in the No. 5 spot.  At the No. 3 spot, Flora Amiri won 6-4, 6-1.  Freshmen Jessica Tsukiji and Alyssia Fossorier notched impressive wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively.  The last match to finish was Lafayette's lone win, where Grace Conrad defeated Arianna Tilbury in three sets.

Dana Mackensen and Megan Mansonhing also played, though their matches were not a part of the official scoring.

"Our team played really well and our efforts paid off," said freshman Dana Mackensen.  "The cold weather could not extinguish our fire."

The Anteaters conclude the trip tomorrow, Oct. 21, when they head to West Haven, Conn., to take on New Haven.
