MADERA, Calif. - UC Irvine men's golf shot a 2-under 286 in the final round of the Nick Watney Invitational to finish fifth out of 12 teams Tuesday at Dragon Fly Golf Club.
It was the Anteaters' best round of the young season as they combined for an overall score of 864 (288-290-286).
Nevada (834) won the team title, but not without a fight from BYU (835), which recorded a tournament-best 272 (-16) to come within one stroke of the Wolf Pack. Rounding out the top-four were UC Santa Barbara (852) and Seattle (853).
Junior
Ramiz Jamal led the 'Eaters as he tied for eighth with a career-best 5-under 211 (72-68-71). It was his first collegiate top-10 finish. After carding a 68 in Monday's second round, Jamal kept the momentum, shooting a 71 (-1) over the final 18. He finished with a team-best 13 birdies.
Junior
Anthony Truong continued to trend upward, climbing five more spots into the top-20. After sitting in 44th through the first 18 holes of the tournament, Truong responded with back-to-back rounds of 2-under 70 to tie for 19th at 215 (75-70-70).
Freshman
Nathan Irwin tied for 33rd with a 54-hole score of 219 (70-76-73), while classmate
Matt Gunson tied for 39th at 221 (72-76-73).
Junior
Jonathan Kang recorded his low round of the tournament with an even-par 72. Kang tied for 42nd overall (222).
Joey Vrzich of Nevada was individual medalist at 14-under 202 (66-66-70).
UC Irvine will be back in action in two weeks when it heads to Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley for the Bill Cullum Invitational, Oct. 15-16.
