Jewett, Sicard Finish Season at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Lloyd Sicard (110H) and sophomore Isaiah Jewett (800m) ran well on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships but were unable to advance to the final in their respective events Wednesday evening at Hayward Field.

Sicard and Jewett will both receive second-team All-America honors by virtue of placing among the top-16. Only the top-two finishers from each of the three heats plus the next two fastest times earned a spot in Friday's final.

Sicard clocked in at 13.70 seconds in the 110-meter hurdle semifinals. He took fifth in his section and was 14th overall in what ended up being his final collegiate race.

Sicard capped a decorated career with his highest finish in his three NCAA Championship appearances. He garnered honorable mention All-America recognition as a sophomore and junior after placing 17th both years. The Gardena, Calif., native is also a three-time Big West champion in the 110H, becoming just the third athlete in conference history to complete a three-peat in that event when he defended his title on May 13. Sicard will leave UCI as the school-record holder at 13.60, while he also ran a wind-aided personal-best 13.55 earlier this season at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational.

Jewett, who was ranked 22nd coming into his first NCAA Championship meet, finished 11th in the 800m semifinals and was just .24 seconds behind the eighth and final qualifying time. He registered a personal-record 1:47.43, moving up one spot to No. 2 in school history as he passed the legendary Steve Scott (1:47.6), and now sits behind only Olympian and NCAA Champion Charles Jock. Jewett's previous best was 1:48.22.

Jewett concludes a breakout sophomore year in which he went undefeated during the regular season and claimed the Big West 800m title. The Inglewood, Calif., native went on to take second in his quarterfinal heat at the NCAA West Preliminaries to punch his ticket to Eugene. After running 1:54.38 in his only 800m race last year, Jewett finished the 2017 campaign with four sub-1:49 times and set a personal best on four occasions.
