FULLERTON, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's track & field team performed well on the first day of the Big West Championships Friday at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Track Complex.
Senior Matt Seawright earned all-conference honors in the discus for the second-straight year as he finished third overall with a season-best 180-07.
Junior Jon Rodriguez added four points with a fifth-place finish in the steeplechase. He shaved over eight seconds off his personal record with a time of 9:25.46.
In the preliminary events on the track, six Anteaters advanced to tomorrow's finals.
Senior Lloyd Sicard, the two-time defending Big West champion in the 110m hurdles, had the top qualifying time in that event at 13.75 seconds. He is the school-record holder (13.60) and established a wind-aided personal-best 13.55 two weekends ago at the Steve Scott Invitational.
Sophomore Isaiah Jewett cruised to a victory in Heat 1 of the 800m to earn an automatic bid into the final. He was third overall in the prelims at 1:53.68, but wasn't really challenged in his section, winning the race by nearly a full second.
Senior Brandon Howard crossed the finish line in 53.60 seconds to win his heat and place second overall in the 400m hurdle prelims. Freshman Andres Woodruff advanced out of the qualifying round as well, registering a lifetime-best 54.26, which was good for seventh.
Freshman Evan Singletary (10.61) and sophomore Paul Resong (48.57) also moved on in the 100m and 400m, respectively. Singletary's time was a career best and puts him at No. 6 in school history. Freshman Jordan Gibson chipped in a personal-record 10.78 in the 100m (11th).
UC Irvine will return to Fullerton on Saturday, May 13, for the second and final day of the Big West Championships.
