INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The fourth-seeded UC Irvine men's tennis team saw its Big West Tournament run come to an end in the semifinals with a 4-0 loss to No. 1 seed UC Santa Barbara Friday afternoon at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The 'Eaters dropped a hard-fought doubles point to start the match. Junior Luca Marquard and sophomore Mason Hansen came up short against Nicolas Moreno/Anders Holm, 6-4, at the No. 2 position. The Gauchos then narrowly clinched at the top of the lineup where junior Sebastian Heim and sophomore Luis Lopez fell to 30th-ranked Morgan Mays/Simon Freund, 7-5.

Court three was also in a tight battle when the point was decided as sophomore Vatsal Bajpai and freshman Bruce Man-Son-Hing were deadlocked at 6-6 with Cody Rakela/Kristian Prior.

UCSB carried the momentum into singles where it picked up three straight-set wins to secure the team victory. At No. 4, Hansen was on the wrong end of a 6-2, 6-2 score against Anders Holm, while Man-Son-Hing followed with a 6-1, 6-2 setback to Rakela at the fifth spot. The Gauchos then finished the match with Freund upending Lopez, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3.

Heim, who was riding a five-match win streak, held a 6-3, 3-2 lead over Mays at No. 1. In addition, Marquard (No. 2) and Bajpai (No. 6) were each working their way back from a first-set loss.

UC Santa Barbara (18-5) extended its win streak to 11 matches as it advances to Sunday's championship against third-seeded Cal Poly.

UC Irvine made its third-straight appearance in the Big West semifinals and ends the season with a 9-15 overall record.
