CLAREMONT, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 8-1, in its regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at Biszantz Tennis Center.
CMS, which is second in the Oracle/ITA Division III National Team Rankings, kept its perfect record intact as it improved to 23-0. This was the Athenas' second win over a Division I opponent.
The match was scored using DIII rules with each doubles contest counting as a point toward the total team score.
After Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won at Nos. 2 and 3 in doubles, the Anteaters got on the board at the top of the lineup where freshman Constance Branstine and sophomore Stephanie Hazell defeated Lindsay Brown and Nicole Tan, 8-5.
The Athenas took control in singles, winning all six matches. Junior Vivien Dvali played at the No. 1 spot, but had to retire after falling behind 3-0 in the first set. Freshman Stephanie Nguyen was also unable to finish her match at No. 3 as she took a 6-4, 3-2, ret., loss.
CMS would clinch the dual at No. 2 where Catherine Allen upended senior Cassidy Branstine. Junior Ashlynn Hall and freshman Jacqueline Tsodikova each put up a fight but fell short in their respective matches. On court four, Hall dropped a 7-6 (5), 6-3 decision, while Tsodikova suffered a 7-6, 0-6, 10-7 setback at the sixth position.
UC Irvine (5-17) will be back in action next week as it heads to Indian Wells, Calif., for the Big West Tournament, April 27-30.
