TORRANCE, LONG BEACH & AZUSA, Calif. – Sophomore Isaiah Jewett earned his fifth individual victory of the season as he won the 800m at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays to lead the UC Irvine men's track & field team on Friday.
Jewett was the top finisher in the collegiate open section with a personal-record 1:48.43. He moved up two spots to No. 3 among UCI's all-time leaders. Jewett has now won five of his six races in 2017 and remained unbeaten in the 800m.
Senior Brandon Howard registered a season-best 53.38 to place 12th in the 400m hurdles.
On the first day of the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, senior Matt Seawright continued his ascent up the Big West leaderboards in the hammer throw. For the second time in as many weeks, Seawright surpassed the 200-foot mark for a lifetime best as he took sixth overall with a toss of 205-06. He ranks third in school history. Junior Jon Dickinson added a top-40 showing at 165-00.
Over at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Stadium, UCI had two distance runners in action. Senior David Aguilar ran a season-best 1:55.68 to finish seventh in Section 7 of the 800m. Freshman Michelangelo Zavala was also third in Section 9 (1:57.31).
UC Irvine will wrap up the weekend with the second and final day of the Beach Invitational tomorrow.
