Anteaters Net Five Event Wins at Mondo Team Challenge

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's track & field team had a strong outing at the Mondo Team Challenge with five event wins Saturday at Hornet Stadium.

"Our athletes took advantage of the team format and great competition having to go against schools we don't always get the chance to compete against on one of the nation's premier facilities," UCI head coach Jeff Perkins said. "I'm proud of the way we competed and am very pleased with our results today, and I'm looking forward to what's to come."

Sophomore Isaiah Jewett finished ahead of the pack in the 400m with a personal-record 46.82. That time moved him up four spots to No. 6 in school history, and ranks first in the Big West this season. Sophomore Paul Resong also came in fourth with a lifetime-best 48.55.

Senior Lloyd Sicard remained unbeaten in the 110m hurdles as he ran a wind-aided season-best 13.87 for his third consecutive win.

The 'Eaters went 1-2 in the 1500m with freshman Hector Garcia earning his first collegiate victory. He was the top performer at 3:56.37, while junior Ashton Garcia was the runner-up (3:58.23). Freshman Samuel Ayala added a fifth-place showing with a season-best 3:59.54.

Freshman Andres Woodruff took fourth in the 400m hurdles, crossing the finish line in a season-best 54.38. Freshman Evan Singletary (10.94) and junior Michael Hamill (11.06) were sixth and eighth in the 100m, respectively.

Sicard, freshman Jordan Gibson, senior Brandon Howard and Singletary also combined for a first-place finish in the 4x100 relay. They notched a season-best 41.52.

In the field events, senior Matt Seawright threw for two season bests and earned one individual victory. He was first in the hammer throw at 191-09, while he was also fourth in the discus (164-06).

Junior Jon Dickinson placed sixth in the hammer with a personal-record 168-09, and sophomore Omar Valenzuela contributed a point with a sixth-place showing in the discus (158-02).

UC Irvine will be back in action at the Big West Challenge Cup in Long Beach next Friday, April 7.
