Megan George Advances to 60H Final at MPSF Championships

SEATTLE, Wash. – Senior Megan George highlighted UC Irvine's first day at the 2017 MPSF Championships by qualifying for the 60-meter hurdle final with a top-eight finish in the prelims Friday at Dempsey Indoor.

George placed second in her heat, and seventh overall, with a time of 8.54 to secure her spot in tomorrow's final. She was the only non-Pac-12 athlete to advance as she is set to compete against individuals from No. 1 Oregon, No. 5 USC, No. 20 Arizona and Arizona State Saturday at 11:30 a.m. It will be her second-straight appearance in the final after also qualifying last year.

Junior Persis William-Mensah won her heat but finished three spots shy of moving on to the 60m final as she crossed the finish line in 7.49 seconds to come in 11th overall. Sophomore Hope Bushnell added a top-30 performance (7.73), while junior Tyra Jones notched a season-best 7.91. Seven of the eight 60m qualifiers were from Oregon and USC.

In the 200m, William-Mensah led a trio of 'Eaters with a 24th-place showing (25.24). Bushnell also took 27th (25.38), and sophomore Brandy Coward ran a personal-record 25.41 to finish 29th. Coward's mark moved her up one spot to No. 5 on the UCI all-time charts.

Senior Ariel Cheng was 24th in the pole vault, clearing a lifetime-best 12-00.50. Cheng ranks third in program history.

In her second meet of the year, junior Dazhana Bauer-Jackson matched her season best at 55-02 to come in 13th in the weight throw. She currently holds the school record at 55-10.25, which she set during the 2016 campaign. Sophomore Barbara Coward, who was third in Flight 1, took 16th with a toss of 53-07.75.

UC Irvine returns to action at Dempsey Indoor for the second and final day of the MPSF Championships on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Anteaters' first event will be the mile run at 11 a.m.
