National Girls and Women in Sports Day is celebrating its 31st year with the theme, "Expanding Opportunity: The Power of Play", aiming to recognize the many athletes, coaches, athletic directors and lawmakers who are committed to expanding opportunity for all girls and women in sports.
Girls and Women in Sports Day became a national observance celebrating the extraordinary achievements of women and girls and sports. Beginning in 1987, this special day served as a remembrance of Olympic volleyball player, Flo Hyman. NGWSD continues to be celebrated across all 50 states as a way to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, the positive influence of sport participation, and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.
