UC Irvine Ends Roadrunner Classic With Win Over CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Harlee Kekauoha recorded her second triple-double of the year and Victoria Dennis led the team in kills as UC Irvine defeated CS Bakersfield 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-18, 25-13) in the finale of the Roadrunner Classic at the Icardo Center.

Both Kekauoha and Dennis were named to the all-tournament team as UCI finished the tournament with a 2-1 record and a 5-9 overall mark. Northern Arizona won the tournament with a 3-0 record.

Kekauoha is the eighth player nationally to record two triple-doubles this season with 12 kills, 12 set assists and a team-high 13 digs. She also had a season-high six block assists. Once againDennis led UCI in kills with 17. She also had two aces and season-high five block assists.

Shelly Anderson had a double-double with 32 set assists and 12 digs, while Haley DeSales posted nine kills, six digs and four aces. Loryn Carter added six kills and Makayla Wolfe had a career-high six block assists to go with a career-best two kills. Brianna Montgomery tallied three aces and four digs in the win.

Bakersfield (3-10) were led by Carol Grasso and Marina Sanches with 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Grasso also had a match-high 18 digs, while Katie Dunbar-Lowe had a match-best eight block assists.

UCI led 3-2 before the Roadrunners went on a 6-1 run to open a 7-4 lead in the first set. The Anteaters went on a 6-2 run of their own, which included two kills and a block assists by Harlee Kekauoha to go back on top 10-9. Three straight kills by the Roadrunners put them up 16-13. A Loryn Carter kill tied the set at 17 and the teams would trade points until a Bakersfield kill and an Anteater attack error gave the Roadrunners the 26-24 win.

Three kills and an ace gave CSUB a 10-6 advantage. Haley DeSales put away a kill and fired two aces to draw within 16-15 then back-to-back kills by Carter and Victoria Dennis tied the score at 18-18. Following a UCI service error, two blocks by Idara Akpakpa opened a 20-19 advantage and UCI would win the second set 25-23.

UCI won the third set 25-18 using a block assist and kill by Makayla Wolfe to go ahead 13-10 and would never relinquish the lead.

In the fourth set, an ace by Brianna Montgomery and kill by Wolfe plus two Roadrunner errors opened a 10-6 advantage. Three more Wolfe block assists and kills by Dennis and Kekauoha added to the lead 15-7. The Anteaters would take the set 25-13 and the match 3-1.

UCI will open Big West Conference action next week, hosting CSUN Thursday (Sept. 22) and Long Beach State Saturday (Sept. 24). Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.
