Anteaters Come Out Swinging In First Tournament Of The Year

Fort Collins, Colo. – UC Irvine opened the 2016-17 season with a strong performance in the first two rounds at the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic.

The Anteaters are in fourth place with a 36-hole total of 590 (298-292). The second round of 292 was the best by an Anteater club since UCI posted a round of 287 on the second round of Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational hosted by New Mexico State on Oct. 7, 2013. San Jose State fired a four-under par 572 (287-285) to lead the tournament. Nevada is second (588) and Gonzaga is in third one shot ahead of UCI at 589.

In her first tournament since redshirting last season, junior Kaley In came back in style, tying her career-low with a 69 on the second round. She is in fifth place leading the Anteaters with a two-under par 142 (73-69). She also recorded a 69 on the first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational on Feb. 15, 2015. 

In was one of six players to record a round in the 60s Monday and trails leader My Leander from San Jose State by four strokes, 138 (68-70) heading in to the final round.

Transfer Avery French is in eight place with a score of 144 (73-71). Senior Samantha Chan is tied for 24th at 149 (75-74), while junior Camille Wagg is tied for 59th with a total of 156 (77-79) and junior Breanne Jones is tied for 72nd at 158 (80-78).

The tournament concludes with 18 holes tomorrow. Teams will tee off in a shotgun start beginning at 7:30 a.m. PT.
