LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Action was fast and furious Friday on the first day of the Big West Conference Track & Field Championships at Long Beach State's Jack Rose Track.

Freshman Barbara Coward was UC Irvine's top point-getter as she finished fourth in the discus throw with a mark of 168-4 to total five team points for the Anteaters.

Ariel Cheng tied for fourth in the pole vault for 4 ½ points as she cleared a season-best height of 12-10.

Kelly Magana placed sixth for three points in the javelin throw at 141-8 for the seventh-best mark in UCI history.

Rebecca Garcia also had a sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:14.79.

The speed was in full force on the track in Friday's preliminaries.

Persis William-Mensah broke her own school record in the 100 meters with a time of 11.59 seconds, eclipsing her previous mark of 11.69 from earlier this season.

Michelle Norman ran 11.84 in the prelims to join William-Mensah in Saturday's final.

In the 200-meter trials, Norman had a time of 24.12 to tie for No. 3 in the Anteater record book and William-Mensah also advanced with a time of 24.26, tying her for seventh-fastest on the UCI Top 10 list.

Simone Buchanan qualified for the 400-meters final with a prelim time of 56.02, improving on her No. 9 mark in UCI history.

A trio of Anteaters will compete in the final of the 100-meter hurdles as Megan George (13.46), Tyra Jones (13.85) and Paige Bushnell (14.00) advanced.

Three from UCI also qualified for the final in the 400-meter hurdles as Paige Bushnell (60.75), Kaulyn Lee-McNeill (61.24) and Crystal Lizaola (61.51) will run Saturday.

UCI is in eighth place with 15 ½ points as UC Davis leads the field with 62 1/2.

Saturday's final day of competition begins with field events at 10:00 a.m. and on the track at 2:08 p.m.  Fox Sports Prime Ticket will televise the action from 2:00-6:00 p.m.
