Irvine, Calif. – No. 57 UC Irvine hosted the Weber State Wildcats Tuesday (Mar.8) morning defeating the team from Utah, 7-0.
The Anteaters took the early lead taking the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots as Tyler Pham and Jonathan Hammel defeated Todd Fought and Jakub Gewert 6-1, and Luca Marquard and Caryl Hernandez won the set 6-2, over Landon Barlow and Hou-En Chen.
The 'Eaters continued with strong play in singles winning the points in all flights. Jonathan Poon made quick work taking both sets at No. 6, 6-4, 6-1 against Weber State's Sanjay Goswami. Justin Agbayani was the victor at flight two with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Chen.
Marquard stepped up to No.1 singles for the first time this season with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 win over Gewert.
Hammel took the first set 6-4, and came back strong in the second to win 7-6 after taking the tie-breaker 7-1 against Stefan Cooper at flight three.
Pham and Vatsal Bajpai rounded out singles earning their points with match tie-breakers.
Pham took the first set against Weber State's Fought 6-4. The Wildcat came back to win the second set 7-6 after taking the tie-breaker 7-4. Pham and Fought played a match tie-breaker with Pham on top 10-8 to earn the point at No. 2.
Bajpai earned the final point at No. 5 against Landon Barlow with a 7-6, 4-6, 3-2 (7-4) win.
The 'Eaters continue to have a full week hosting a double header Wednesday (Mar. 9) first against Gonzaga at 10:00 a.m. followed by a match with Liberty at 2:00 p.m at the Anteater Tennis Stadium.
