Irvine, Calif. – No. 6 UC Irvine was back at home to face No. 18 San Diego State in a tough battle that was not decided until sudden death as the Anteaters defeated the Aztecs 6-5.
The first period remained scoreless until the final moments when
Mary Brooks stole the ball with five seconds left and passed it to Corrina Toledo for the goal with three seconds on the clock.
The Aztecs came out ready to play for the second period scoring three including two goals by Caroline Israels as the Anteaters headed into halftime down 3-1.
The beginning of the second half saw tough defenses by both sides as the score remained unchanged in the third period and three attempts by
Julie Swieca came up empty.
UCI made it exciting in the fourth quarter with a shot attempt by
Gabby Pierandozzi that was rebounded by Brooks and shot for the goal to bring the 'Eaters within one goal of the Aztecs. Pierandozzi then tied it up with a goal of her own at 2:37 left and neither team scored in the final minutes of the period to take the match to overtime.
UC Irvine came up with the first goal in overtime with a shot by Pierandozzi but the Aztecs followed it up as Israels scored on a power play.
Annika Nelson blocked a shot with seconds left in OT and with a 4-4 score the game headed into second overtime.
With eight seconds left in OT2 Hannah Lancaster scored for the Anteaters and the Aztecs answered right back with a goal and two seconds on the clock. The game would be decided by sudden death.
After two minutes of sudden death, Pierandozzi scored the golden goal with :58 on the clock as the Anteaters took the 6-5 victory over San Diego State.
