UC Irvine Competes at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship

La Jolla, Calif. – The first day of the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship brought a mixed bag for UC Irvine's doubles pairs and used a shortened match format (8-game Pro Set).

Jonathan Hammel and Tyler Pham upset the fifth seeded duo and USC's top team with an 8-5 win over Nicholas Crystal and Laurens Verboven 8-5, followed by an 8-4 win over Goodman/Podvinki of Baylor. 

Hammel and Pham fell in round 32 to Goransson and Griffith of Cal, 8-4, removing them from the remainder of the tournament.

Justin Agbayani and Jonathan Poon began the tournament defeating Jakubowki/Lamart from Bryant 8-3, advancing to the next round where they took down Brenner/Vemuri (Claremont Mudd Scripps) 8-3.

Agbayani and Poon ultimately succumbed in round 32 in their third match of the day to Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell of Boise State who they just faced the day before in team competition but UCI took the doubles point before their match was complete.

Luca Marquard and Caryl Hernandez took the loss in their first match 8-3 to the top seeded pair in the tournament and nationally ranked No. 15 Cash/Kadhe from Oklahoma State University. Marquard and Hernandez continued playing in the consolation bracket which only pairs that lose in the first round qualify to participate. They walked away with wins in the first and third round and a bye in the second advancing to the fourth round of consolation and will contend with a doubles pair from Villanova in the second day of action.

After an 8-2 loss in the first round, Vatsal Bajpai and Anil Patel were defeated 8-2 by UNLV pair Alberts/Amilon in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Sebastian Heim and Nico Mertens played a tough first match losing 8-6 to Hill/Menichella of Pepperdine and were sent to the consolation rounds where they are still contending and will continue play in the second day of the tournament to go up against the third seeded duo of the competition. 

Day Two

UC Irvine still had two doubles pairs competing in the second day of the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in the consolation bracket.

In the fourth round of consolation Marquard and Hernandez defeated Villanova's Noyes/Seitz taking both sets 6-4, 7-5.

Marquard and Hernandez advanced to the quarter finals where they went head to head with the fifth seeded pair and USC's top team Crystlal/Verboven who were knocked into the consolation bracket on the first day by UCI's Hammel and  Pham. Marquard and Hernandez were not able to repeat yesterday's defeat and lost 6-3, 6-2 to the Trojan team.

Also in the fourth round of consolation Heim and Mertens took down the third seeded duo David Goulak and Ivan Thamma 6-4, 7-5 but retired before the quarter finals.

No. 69 UC Irvine will take on Furman in San Diego on Sunday (Mar.6) at 2:00 p.m.
