UC Irvine Cruises to Win, Sweep over Nevada Behind Vetrovec

IRVINE, Calif. --- The 'Eaters posted their second straight Sunday shutout thanks to seven strong innings from Shaun Vetrovec heading up the 6-0 win over Nevada to conclude the weekend sweep in Anteater Ballpark.

Vetrovec was rolling once again dispatching a few early-inning situations before sitting down 17 of 19 hitters from the third through seventh innings to keep Nevada (3-5) down.

His offense peppered the scoreboard plating runs in four different innings highlighted by a massive, two-run home run from Keston Hiura in the third inning over the center field fence to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

Alex Guenette picked up where he left off doubling in his first at-bat since Saturday night's walk-off, and producing a pair of RBIs to put UCI (5-3) on top early.

The 'Eaters added runs in the fifth and sixth innings on sacrifice flies to complete the scoring on the afternoon and cruise to the 6-0 win.

Sean Sparling and Calvin Faucher returned for a replay of Friday night's effort shutting down the Wolf Park for the final two innings to secure the victory.

The Anteaters made good on their nine hits which included two-hit days from Mitchell Holland and Evan Cassolato. Adam Alcantara and Grant Palmer each came around to score twice.

Nevada starter Trenton Brooks allowed all six runs over his five innings on seven hits and four walks. Four players split the hits for UNR while Bryce Greager managed both of Nevada's walks.

The Anteaters will head out for a quick trip to Loyola Marymount on Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. start before opening up another weekend homestand on Friday as they welcome in UT San Antonio.
