STANFORD, Calif. --- Jared Osborn (seven goals) and Dylan Peterson (20 saves) registered career highs, but UC Irvine was edged by Long Beach State, 12-11, in sudden-death overtime at the Kap7 NorCal Invitational Sunday.
Osborn's seventh goal of the game, and his third in the fourth quarter, came with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 9-9.
Antoine Lena scored with 2:24 left in the first overtime session to give UCI a 10-9 lead, which was answered by LBSU's Duncan Lynde 21 seconds later.
Lee Griffin scored with 1:11 left in that period to put the 49ers up 11-10.
UCI junior Kyle Trush scored with 1:37 remaining in the second overtime to knot the game at 11-11.
Zacchary Kappos won the game for LBSU on a goal 1:37 into sudden-death overtime.
Trush scored a pair of goals for the 'Eaters (6-2) and Matt Skinner had a goal in the second quarter to give UCI a 4-2 halftime lead.
The 49ers outscored UCI 4-1 in the third period and the teams traded leads throughout the rest of the game.
Griffin led LBSU with three goals.
"I'm pleased we were able to close in on them in the fourth quarter and push to overtime, despite losing some key players to fouls," Anteater head coach Marc Hunt said. "Osborn got hot and had some great finishes in our 6-on-5.
"It was a great battle with a lot of big plays made by several guys. Dylan was strong in the cage and Trush was consistent throughout.
"We had chances to close out the win and moving forward, we must work to capitalize on those types of opportunities," Hunt added.
The 'Eaters face Pepperdine in the seventh-place game at approximately 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
