IRVINE, Calif. --- No. 75 UC Irvine put up a brilliant singles effort to thwart a Phoenix upset Saturday morning in Anteater Tennis Stadium winning 4-3.
Green Bay (10-6) took the doubles point in a sweep at Nos. 1 and 3 for the early 1-0 lead.
UC Irvine (14-9, 1-0) rallied back to take a 2-1 lead from sweeps by Nico Mertens and Jonathan Poon.
UWGB rose from the ashes to retake the lead at 3-2 with a pair of sweeps from Florian Kraenzler and No. 124 Michael Tenzer.
Tyler Pham turned back Leopold Gomez Islinger at No. 2 singles for a three-set victory to tie the match at 3-3.
Jonathan Hammel provided the dagger at No. 5 returning from an opening-set deficit to nail down the fourth and final point for the 'Eaters.
UC Irvine's afternoon is just getting started as it hosts Eastern Washington at 2:30 p.m. once again in Anteater Tennis Stadium.
