Santa Ana, Cali. -- Texas A&M's Marijosse Navarro won a tiebreaker on the fifth playoff hole to capture the individual title of the UC Irvine Invitational presented by Kia which concluded Tuesday at the Santa Ana Country Club.
Navarro's title earns her the sponsor's exemption to the Kia Classic held March 23-29 at the Aviara Golf Club.
Navarro birdied the 18th hole on the final round to get to five-under par 211 (72-68-71) and force the play-off with USC's Gabriella Then (70-68-73). The duo matched scores until Navarro one-putted for par on the 14th hole. Then pushed her final four-foot putt wide giving Navarro the victory.
Fourth-ranked Washington won the team title with a three round total of 854 (283-283-288), 11 strokes in front of No. 2 USC (865). Texas A&M was third (870) and UNLV was fourth, firing the lowest round of the tournament, 276, on Tuesday. SMU was fifth (872), Texas Tech was (884) sixth, UC Davis seventh (889), San Diego State eighth (891), Pepperdine ninth (894), Gonzaga 10th (900), Stanford 11th (901), Long beach State 12th (917) and host UC Irvine was 13th (922).
The Huskies were led by Charlotte Thomas (73-70-69) and Jennifer Yang (69-72-71) who tied for third place after carding a 212. Thomas, Yang, Cyd Okino and Ying Luo all shot a round of 69 during the 54-hole event for Washington.
UNLV's Harley Dubsky fired a 67 on the final round, which is tied for the lowest score ever at the UCI tournament, tying Gonzaga's Alice Kim who recorded a 67 in 2013 when she earned medalist honors.
UCI sophomore Kaley In placed 42nd with a score of 228 (73-72-83). Freshman Camille Wagg was tied for 47th at 229 (75-76), while junior Kristin Henno was 54th with a score of 231 (79-77-75), sophomore Samantha Chan was 66th at 239 (84-78-77) and freshman Kelsey Kawaguchi was 70th with a total of 244 (81-82-81). UCI individuals played well as freshman Breanne Jones was tied for 42nd at 228 (77-72-79) and freshman Joo Seo was tied for 47th at 229 (80-76-73).
The Anteaters will return to action March 9-10 at the Bay Area Intercollegiate held at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
